If you are a baseball fan, and you are a L. A. Dodger fan, you may have watched last night’s game against the San Francisco Giants. The game was held in San Francisco. During the game, it was announced that in April of 2023, the Giants will play the San Diego Padres in Mexico City. The first time a major league baseball game will be held in Mexico. Very cool.

When talking about the upcoming game, a young woman from Mexico visited the announcers of last night’s game. She carried an item that caught my attention. Not that it was a baseball helmet, but it was a baseball helmet covered in beads. Ahaa! That artwork has to be from Huichol, a village in the state of Jalisco, MX. This particular settlement is home of a group of indigenous people, who choose to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. We traveled for several hours, climbed into a boat and were motored to this hidden area in the middle of a large lake in the middle of a mountainous region.

Our group was treated to a delicious meal, given a tour of their village, and finally guided to several tables full of beautiful artwork. The above photograph is of a few items that I purchased from the Huichol Indians. A small gourd is dried and covered in bee’s wax. Then tiny beads are meticulously placed on the wax. As you can see, the artwork is beautiful. They also make lovely beaded jewelry. The people speak Huichol which is a Mexican dialect belonging to the Uto-Aztecan language. We had an interpreter to help us communicate with our new friends. I am so pleased to have visited this little paradise in the mountains and to have several pieces of Huichol artwork in my collection of memorabilia.
